Two college freshmen, bundled in layers. ONE: tall and gawky, a listener. TWO: short, baring flashes of braces as she speaks.
ONE
You heard she’s pregnant.
TWO
Yeah.
ONE
It’s so not cute.
TWO
I know.
ONE
Teen pregnancy is so ten minutes ago.
TWO
Totally.
ONE
I saw this teen mom on a show the other day. She was Southern.
TWO
I think I saw that.
ONE
She was trying to get full custody of her kid. This lawyer asked her if she used any illegal substances. She was like, “Ah nevah had a drink in mah lahhhhf. Nevah smoked pot evah. Ah don’t even smoke. Just heroin. But I would stop if you got me custody.
TWO
Oh my God.
ONE
I know. I’m so glad I didn’t grow up in that part of the country.
TWO
Me too. (Pause) I think I would realize that I was speaking wrong. I think I’d stop and tell everyone: I’m not going to talk this way any more.
ONE
Yup.
