The Gifted Program

Carbajal’s humor alternates between lacerating and indulgent, and never slackens.”
– The New Yorker

High School. Racine, Wisconsin. 1986. When funding for their insulated program for the gifted and talented dries up, four nerdy sophomores try to survive a rough and tumble public school.

Portland

Winner of the Coastal Empire One-Act Play Festival

Written while I was a resident at the Edna St. Vincent Millay Colony, it remains one of my most-produced plays. It’s an atmospheric, dreamlike story about young love and heartbreak. A synopsis:

Ed, a young man adrift in life, moves into a small apartment with Li, his ex-lover. Ed’s awkward encounters as a hotel room-service waiter punctuate the ambiguous intimacy with his roommate, as their murky past and true feelings become clear. A thoughtful meditation on the indivisibility of love and loss.

Outstanding Men’s Monologues Volume 2

It’s startling to see a monologue from The Gifted Program rub elbows with the likes of: Terrance McNally, Adam Szymcowicz, Mark Schultz, Don DeLillo, Craig Pospisil, David Ives, and Cormac McCarthy!

The Best Men’s Stage Monologues of 2005

Includes a monologue from The Gifted Program, where Doug, a stoner who can’t seem to get used to the harsh Wisconsin winter, tries to rally the troops. I’m proud to be listed among the ranks of Sheila Callaghan, Charles Evered, Stephen Adly Guirgis, and Craig Lucas.

More Scenes and Monologues from the Best New Plays
